A dull mower blade doesn't just cut badly. It tears grass tips, which leaves the lawn looking brown and stressed, and it forces the engine to work harder. For a zero turn mower, blade condition is one of the fastest ways to improve cut quality and reduce fuel consumption.

Step-by-Step Blade Sharpening Process

Disconnect the Power Source
For a gas zero turn mower, remove the ignition key. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting. For an electric zero turn mower, remove the battery or disconnect the main power connector.

Raise the Deck Safely
Park the mower on a level, firm surface. Use a jack or ramps to raise the front of the mower so you can access the underside of the deck. Secure the machine with jack stands. Never work under a mower supported only by a jack.

Remove the Blades
Use a socket wrench to remove the blade bolt. A blade lock tool holds the blade in place. If you don't have one, wedge a block of wood between the blade and the deck. Note the orientation of each blade so you reinstall it correctly.

Hold the blade firmly and grind along the existing bevel at 30 degrees. Work in one direction, matching the factory angle. Keep the blade cool by dipping it in water every few passes. Overheating the metal weakens the edge.

After grinding, a small burr forms on the back side of the blade. Run a file or deburring stone along the back edge to remove it. A burr left in place will break off during the first mowing and create a dull edge immediately.

Place the blade on a blade balancer. If one side drops, remove a small amount of metal from the heavy end until the blade sits level. This step is important. An unbalanced blade will wear out deck spindles and bearings prematurely.

Reinstall the Blades

Blades should be replaced when the cutting edge is thinner than the back of the blade, there are cracks, bends, or chips near the cutting edge, the blade is out of balance and cannot be corrected, the blade has been sharpened so many times that it is visibly smaller than new, or bolts and mounting holes are worn or elongated.

A damaged blade is a safety hazard. If in doubt, replace it. Blade replacement is inexpensive compared to deck or spindle repair.
