Total Control. Superior Cut.
The S20 is a 20-inch walk-behind reel mower for homeowners who want the best possible cut and don't mind the physical effort it takes to get there. Same cutting platform as the Z20 — same reel diameter, same blade count, same scissor-cut quality. The question is whether you want the experience of being in full control.

Technical Deep Dive
Biangular Heat-Treated Reel Blades
The reel blade geometry isn't arbitrary. "Biangular" refers to the double-angle profile of each blade — this affects how efficiently grass is drawn into the cutting point between reel and bedknife, and how clippings are directed into the catcher. Heat treatment extends blade edge life significantly. After three seasons, a heat-treated blade still holds an edge where standard steel has been resharpened multiple times already.
Split Steel Drum Rear Roller
The split steel drum uses internal steel domes — essentially a tube with internal reinforcing sections — rather than a solid cast roller. This gives it rigidity without the weight penalty. The vulcanized rubber coating grips better than polished steel on damp grass, won't delaminate under stress, and dampens noise on hard surfaces like concrete paths.
Chain Drive vs Belt Drive
Belt drive is the default in consumer-grade rotary mowers because belts are cheap and quiet. They also require replacement every 1-3 seasons, stretch and slip under heavy load, and sometimes snap mid-cut. Chains don't do any of that. A properly lubricated chain maintains consistent gear ratio throughout its entire service life. Chain replacement is straightforward: remove two covers, slide the old chain off, slide the new one on. No deck removal, no special tools. The tradeoff: chains are noisier than belts.
40-Liter Grass Catcher
The catcher capacity is a practical balance for the 500-2,000 sqm use case. At the lower end, you might not need to empty at all. At the upper end, expect three to four stops. The split blade design directs clippings toward the center of the catcher rather than piling them at the front. Even fill means no tipping, cleaner disposal, and less grass stuck in corners of the deck.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about the S20, cut quality, maintenance, and choosing between push and self-propelled.
What's the difference between the S20 and the Z20?
Same cutting platform. The difference is how you move. The S20 is manual push — you control speed entirely. The Z20 has an engine-powered drive system that pulls itself forward. The S20 is lighter, cheaper, and gives you more direct feedback about what the cut is doing. The Z20 is less fatiguing on larger lawns or if you have any mobility concerns. For a 500-1,500 sqm lawn that's reasonably flat, the S20's extra effort isn't prohibitive. Beyond that, the Z20 starts making more sense.
Why chain drive instead of belts?
Durability. Belts are cheaper to manufacture and quieter in operation — that's why most consumer mowers use them. But they stretch with heat, slip under load, crack with age, and occasionally snap mid-season without warning. Chains maintain consistent gear ratio from day one to the day you replace them, which on this platform typically means 3-5 years. The tradeoff is noise: you'll hear the chain while mowing. If you're mowing early morning or have noise-sensitive neighbors, factor that in.
How often do I need to sharpen the blades?
For typical residential use — once a week during peak growing season — expect to sharpen every 150-200 hours. That's roughly once every two to three seasons, depending on your grass type and soil conditions. Sandy soil accelerates blade dulling significantly. You'll know it's time when the cut starts looking ragged even though the blades look visually sharp — micro-wear on the edge doesn't always show to the naked eye. Budget around $40-60 per sharpening service, or learn to do it yourself with a sharpening kit.
Does it work on all grass types?
It works on all grasses, but it's best suited to fine-leaf residential turf: Kentucky Bluegrass, Bermuda, Fescue, Zoysia. Cylinder mowers need consistent cutting height to perform well — they don't like being asked to take off more than a third of the blade at once. If you let your lawn grow tall between cuts, a cylinder mower will struggle and leave a rough result. That's a user problem, not a machine problem. Mow regularly (ideally weekly during active growth) and the cut quality will reflect that.
Is this really better than a rotary mower?
The cut quality is genuinely better — cleaner, faster healing, less brown tip. Whether that matters to you depends on how much you care about lawn appearance. For homeowners who notice grass quality and maintain their lawn regularly, the answer is almost always yes. For homeowners who just need the lawn cut and don't obsess over the result, a rotary mower is perfectly adequate and considerably cheaper. Don't buy a reel mower if you won't mow it regularly. That's where cylinder mowers fail — not because of the machine, but because of the mismatch between expectations and maintenance commitment.
Can I use it on slopes?
Yes, up to roughly 15 degrees — operate across the slope rather than up and down. The rubber-coated rear roller provides better grip than bare steel on damp inclines. Beyond that angle, control becomes genuinely difficult on a push mower. For steeper or uneven terrain, the Z20's self-propelled drive gives you more consistent forward momentum. Don't push a push mower on a slope you wouldn't feel confident walking on. Gravity doesn't negotiate.
What does the warranty actually cover?
One year on all components. Five years on the chassis — frame, deck, and roller. The chassis warranty is the meaningful number here: this is the same coverage offered by brands built on this production platform in North America. Extended warranty programs are available for dealers. Most warranty claims on this platform are engine-related (not chassis), which are typically handled through the engine manufacturer's own service network rather than the mower brand.
Is private label/OEM available?
Yes. MOQ starts at 50 units for basic decal and logo customization. Packaging customization at 200 units. Full specification modifications — engine, height range, blade count — at 100 units. Lead time 25-35 days. The production platform is the same one supplying established North American and European mower brands, so the baseline build quality is proven. If you're building a new brand or entering a new market with a custom configuration, this is a realistic starting point.
