17 Inch Cylinder Mower
CM17
hot selling index
432mm (17 Inch) Cutting Width — Wide enough to matter, narrow enough to fit through most garden gates without repositioning
Honda GX160 Engine — 163cc OHV 4-stroke; the engine every landscaper trusts
5-Blade Reel Cutting — Scissor-cut that's genuinely different from rotary; grass heals faster, stays greener at the tip
Quiet Operation — ~72 dB; early morning mowing doesn't require earplugs or an apology to the neighbors
Lawn Striping Ready — Rear steel roller bends grass forward as you pass, creating visible stripe contrast
Push Operation — You control the speed; no transmission to slip, no drive belt to replace

The Mower You Actually Use
The S17 is the mower most homeowners land on after they've tried a cheaper rotary and got fed up with brown tips, noisy engines, and machines that don't last past three seasons. At 17 inches, it threads through standard garden gates without you having to lift or angle anything.

Technical Deep Dive
Honda GX160 Engine
This engine is everywhere for a reason. The overhead-valve design runs cooler and uses less fuel than side-valve alternatives. The cast iron cylinder sleeve handles long hours without the bore wear you'd get from aluminum. The dual-element air filter protects the internals when you're mowing a property that's been dry for a while.
One thing that matters more than people realize: global parts availability. Spark plug, air filter, oil filter — these are stocked at any small-engine dealer worldwide. That matters in year three when something wears out and you're not into the warranty paperwork.
432mm (17 Inch) Cutting Width
The 17-inch width is the practical compromise in the residential range. 14 inches handles small courtyards well, but on open medium lawns you're making too many passes. 20 inches is genuinely productive on large areas but starts to feel like steering a small car in a backyard with garden beds and tight corners. 432mm threads through most residential garden gates without you having to lift the front wheels or angle the deck. For a lawn between 500 and 1,500 sqm, this is the width that actually gets used.
5-Blade Precision Reel
Five blades is a deliberate engineering decision. More blades (6, 7, 8) would give you a finer cut, but on a walk-behind push mower you're also increasing the force needed to push it — every extra blade adds rolling resistance. Fewer blades (3 or 4) reduce that resistance but you start to see the cutting interval in the grass, especially in denser growth. Five is where the S17 lands: clean enough for a quality residential finish, push effort that's manageable for a typical adult on level ground. It's not the maximum possible quality — it's the right balance for the application.
Push Operation
The push design has a tradeoff that's worth being clear about: you do the work, but you get total speed control. On a level residential lawn with good soil, this is genuinely fine — the S17 at ~65kg rolls well when properly maintained. On slopes, a self-propelled model makes more sense. The push design also means no drive belt to stretch and slip in year two, no transmission to service, and a machine that's lighter to move in and out of storage. You exercise while you mow. Whether that's a benefit or a drawback depends on who you ask.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to common questions about the S17, cut quality, and choosing the right mower for your lawn.
What lawn size is the S17 actually designed for?
The S17 is built for 500 to 1,500 sqm. Below 500 sqm, the S14's narrower deck actually has an advantage in tight spaces — you'll maneuver faster. Above 1,500 sqm, you're making more passes than you need to, and a 20-inch model is worth the extra effort to push. The 17-inch size earns its keep in the middle range.
How does the S17 compare to a 21-inch rotary mower on cut quality?
Not even close. The rotary tears the top off the grass — you see it in the browning at the tips within a couple of days. Reel cutting is a clean scissor action; the grass heals faster. For lawns where looks matter, or where you're trying to maintain a species that's sensitive to stress, the difference is real. The tradeoff: the S17 requires regular mowing. If you let the lawn get tall, a rotary handles overgrown grass better than a cylinder mower.
Can the S17 handle tall or thick grass?
Honest answer: no, not without adjustment. Like every cylinder mower, it wants to cut little and often. If grass is above 10cm, raise the cutting height, make one pass, let it recover for a day or two, then drop to your target height. Trying to scalp overgrown grass with a reel mower will stall it and leave you with a ragged cut. The Honda GX160 has enough torque for normal residential densities — it's the cutting height management that matters.
How good are the lawn stripes, really?
The rear steel roller creates the stripe effect by bending grass forward as you pass. On a 17-inch width, you'll get clean, consistent stripes on medium-sized lawns. They won't have the deep contrast of a wide commercial machine, but for a residential lawn, most people are genuinely impressed with how it looks. The stripes fade after 3-5 days and you mow again.
Why the Honda GX160 and not something cheaper?
Because the GX160 is the one that doesn't give you trouble. We've seen plenty of other brands that save money at purchase and cost more in downtime. The GX160 has a global dealer network, standardized parts, and a rebuild market if you ever need it. On a machine you're keeping for 10 years, the engine choice matters.
S14, S17, or S20 — how do I choose?
Under 500 sqm with tight corners: S14. It turns in places the wider machines can't.
500 to 1,500 sqm, standard residential: S17. This is where it fits best.
Over 1,500 sqm or large open areas: S20. The extra width pays off on bigger ground.
If you're borderline, go wider — you'll notice the time savings.
Is the S17 hard to push?
On level ground with the cutting height set correctly, it's fine. Set it too low or try to force it through slightly overgrown grass and it loads up fast. The 5-blade reel is a deliberate balance: more blades mean cleaner cutting but more push resistance. ~65kg is manageable for most adults. On slopes, this is where push mowers show their limitation — if your lawn has more than gentle slopes, look at a self-propelled option.
Is private label/OEM available?
Yes, from 50 units. The GX160 engine option and custom color options require 100 units minimum. Private label from 50 units is genuinely accessible for smaller dealers and regional brands. Lead time 25-35 days.
What warranty coverage does the S17 come with?
One year on all components, five years on the chassis — frame, deck, and roller assembly. Extended warranty programs are available for authorized dealers. The GX160 carries Honda's own engine warranty, which is separate and backed by Honda's global service network.
Can the S17 be used commercially?
It'll handle light commercial work — small estates, courtyards, detail areas. But if you're mowing 2,000 sqm of commercial lawn every week, a heavier-duty self-propelled machine is the right tool. The S17 is at its best as a residential mower that occasionally does more. It's not designed for daily professional use at full capacity.
